INFORMATION
11. EDITORIAL PHOTOSHOOT 'DUALISM'
11.1 SYNOPSIS
The notion of identity is a dynamic and complex construct, shaped by the external influences that we encounter. These influences, including our surroundings, era, race, and occupation, serve as indicators of our self-representation, ultimately shaping our identities to align with our current circumstances.
Taking inspiration from the historical backdrop of communism in Poland (1952–1989), characterized by stringent propaganda and restricted personal freedom, the photographs encapsulate the contrasting duality of the individual portrayed. Images taken on location depict the suppressed and constrained part of the one’s personality, under the control of the authorities. Conversely, the studio photographs capture an unbridled authenticity, showcasing the less restricted side of the individual, where expressions are unrestricted, movements uninhibited, and identities are free to flourish, unencumbered by the looming threat of punishment or censorship.
In order to fully reproduce the environment of communism, for this editorial we used a Warsaw communist space and the entire wardrobe from "pewex", which was one of the few clothing stores available during this period.
